What is a longtail cargo bike
A longtail is a bike with an extended rear rack that carries children or cargo behind the rider. It is as narrow as a normal bike and rides much like one, so the switch from a city bike is easy. Compact longtails are 1.8 to 1.9 m long; full-size models reach 2.1 m and more.
Longtail or front loader
On a longtail the children sit behind you: you do not see them, but they sit close to the centre of the bike and the bike stays narrow in traffic. A front loader gives a view of the children and weather protection, at the price of length and weight. For two children and limited storage space, a longtail is usually the easier choice.
What to look for
Check the rating of the rear rack, which ranges from 50 to 100 kg, and the permitted total weight. A small 20-inch rear wheel puts the load low and makes the bike easier to balance; 26-inch wheels roll more smoothly. Seats, rails and footboards are often sold separately, so compare complete prices.
Frequently asked questions
How many children fit on a longtail?
Usually two in seats or on a bench; a few long models take three. Look at the rack rating: two children with seats weigh 50 to 70 kg.
Can an adult ride on a longtail?
On many models, yes, if the rack is rated for the passenger's weight and footrests and a grab handle are fitted. Check the manual of the specific bike.
Is a longtail hard to ride?
No. It feels like a slightly longer bike. With heavy children high on the rack it can feel top-heavy at walking pace, which is why a low rear wheel helps.
