A front loader, or bakfiets, carries its load in a box or on a platform between the handlebar and the front wheel. Children sit in front of you, in view and within reach, and a rain cover keeps them dry. Two-wheeled front loaders are 2.1 to 2.7 m long.
The front wheel is far ahead and is steered by a rod or cables, which feels unusual for the first kilometres and natural after that. The low box keeps the weight down, so a loaded front loader is stable once it rolls. Suspension, or at least wide tyres, matters more here than on other bikes because the passengers sit over the front.
Check the load rating of the box, which ranges from 60 to 125 kg, the permitted total weight and the number of seats and belts. Measure your storage: most front loaders need ground-level parking. Bikes of 40 to 60 kg need a strong motor, and 85 Nm is the norm.
Two on the standard bench; larger boxes take three or four with an extra bench. A baby seat can often be fitted for the youngest.
It is better for small children and bad weather: you see them and can cover the box. A longtail is shorter, lighter and easier to store.
On good cycle paths, no. On cobbles and poor roads a suspension fork or full suspension makes a clear difference for the passengers.
