Our verdict

The Tern Orox R14 is the top Orox for riders who go far and off the tarmac: a sealed 14-speed hub with belt drive, a CX motor and an 800 Wh battery. It is expensive, large and has a rigid fork, so it only makes sense if you use that toughness.

Pros

  • Sealed 14-speed hub with belt, very low maintenance
  • 800 Wh battery and CX motor for long trips
  • Rear rack rated for 100 kg, two children
  • Strong 85 Nm motor pulls full loads up steep hills
  • Large 800 Wh battery for long days
  • Low-maintenance belt drive — no chain oil on clothes

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • 2.14 m long and 82 cm wide
  • Rigid fork, comfort depends on the tyres
  • Premium price from €8,100

Ideal for…

  • Long tours and off-road trips with gear or kids
  • Riding all year in mud, snow and salt
  • Hilly cities
  • Long daily commutes

Not recommended if…

  • Short city trips on smooth streets
  • Small flats without ground-level storage

Who it is for

The Tern Orox R14 is for riders who carry gear, children or tools over gravel, snow and forest tracks and want a drivetrain that survives dirt. The rear rack is rated for 100 kg and carries two children with suitable seats, and the bike is rated for 210 kg on the road and 180 kg off-road. It rolls on 29-inch tyres and measures about 2.14 m long and 82 cm wide.

Riding and everyday use

The 14-speed hub gear with belt drive is the main difference from the Orox S12: the gears are sealed inside the hub, nothing needs oiling and mud or salt do little harm. The Bosch Performance Line CX with 85 Nm climbs steep, loose ground. Tern quotes 93 to 161 km with the 800 Wh battery; with a load on mixed terrain, plan on around 60 km, and more with a second battery. The fork is rigid steel, so the fat tyres do the suspension work, and Magura MT5 brakes handle long descents.

Before you buy

At 2.14 m long and about 35 kg, the Orox needs ground-level storage and does not pass narrow barriers easily. The price is far above the S12, so choose the R14 only if you ride in mud, snow or on long tours. For city use the shorter Tern GSD is more practical.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Orox R14 and S12?

Can the Orox R14 carry children?

Yes, two children on the rear rack with suitable seats, within 100 kg on the rack and 210 kg in total on the road.

How many children can the Tern Orox R14 carry?

The Tern Orox R14 can carry up to 2 children, depending on the seats and accessories fitted.

What range does the Tern Orox R14 have?

With its 800 Wh battery we estimate about 63 km per charge with an 80 kg rider and 40 kg of cargo on rolling terrain. Use the range calculator above for your own scenario.

How much does the Tern Orox R14 weigh and how much can it carry?

The bike weighs about 34.9 kg and has a maximum permitted total weight (rider, cargo and bike) of 210 kg.
