A normal e-bike uses around 8 to 12 Wh per kilometre; a cargo bike with children or goods on board needs roughly 10 to 20 Wh. A 700 Wh battery therefore gives about 40 to 70 km with a load, depending on hills, temperature and assistance level. Manufacturer figures are measured in favourable conditions, so treat them as an upper limit.
There are two routes to a long range: a single pack of 700 to 800 Wh, or a dual-battery system that brings the total to 1,000 Wh and more. A second battery adds about 3 to 4 kg and a considerable sum to the price, and both batteries need charging. Check the charger as well: with a small charger, a large battery takes most of the night.
A large battery pays off on commutes of more than 15 km each way, in hilly areas, for delivery work and when you cannot charge at home every day. In winter, cold reduces the usable capacity noticeably, so a reserve is welcome. For short trips in a flat city, 500 Wh is usually enough and saves weight and money.
With 700 Wh and a load, expect about 40 to 70 km. With two batteries, 80 to 120 km is realistic; hills, cold and a high assistance level reduce it.
Only if you regularly ride more than your single battery covers. Many bikes can be fitted with one later, so you can start with one and decide after a few months.
Yes. In cold weather the usable capacity drops noticeably. Store and charge the battery indoors and fit it shortly before you ride.
