Compact cargo bikes are about as long as a normal bike, under 1.9 m, and many can be parked upright on their tail. Small 20-inch wheels and a low frame keep the load down. They fit into lifts, hallways and bike rooms where a front loader would never go.
Most compact models carry one child or one adult passenger; compact longtails take two children. Rack ratings range from 50 to 100 kg, total ratings from 150 to 210 kg. For three children or bulky cargo you need a full-size bike.
Check length and width against your lift or stairwell, and the weight of the bike if you have to lift it. Small wheels pass on more bumps, so wide tyres or a suspension fork help. A total rating below 180 kg is tight for a heavy rider with a child.
Compact longtails with a rack rated for 70 kg or more can. Short utility bikes with a 50 kg rack are meant for one child.
Most bikes under 1.9 m fit in a standard lift, especially upright. Measure the diagonal of your lift to be sure.
They are less smooth on rough roads but make the bike lower, stronger and easier to balance with a load.
