The first-generation HSD P9 is one of the lightest ways into cargo biking: 25.7 kg, 1.63 m long and room for one child. The 50 Nm motor and 400 Wh battery limit it on steep hills and with heavy loads.
AllCargo estimate: 80 kg rider, 40 kg cargo, rolling terrain, tour mode.

The Tern HSD P9 is for riders who want one bike for commuting, shopping and the school run, without the bulk of a real cargo bike. At 1.63 m it is shorter than most city bikes, and with the stem folded it fits in many car boots and small lifts. One child rides on the rear rack with a suitable seat or Tern's Clubhouse rails.
At 25.7 kg the HSD handles like a normal e-bike. The Bosch drive with 50 Nm is smooth and quiet but runs out of breath on steep climbs with a child on board. The 400 Wh battery is enough for daily city trips; Tern quotes up to 110 km in ideal conditions, with a load expect around a third of that.
The total weight limit is 170 kg, so check that rider, child and luggage stay under it. The 9-speed Shimano Alivio derailleur is simple to service. If you ride with heavier loads or in hilly areas, the newer HSD with a stronger motor is the better choice.
Yes, one child on the rear rack with a suitable child seat or the Clubhouse rails. The bike is rated for 170 kg in total, including the rider.
With the stem folded and the seatpost lowered, the HSD fits in many estate cars and larger hatchbacks. It can also stand upright on its rear rack to save floor space.
Tern quotes up to 110 km with the 400 Wh battery in ideal conditions. With a child on the back and mixed terrain, plan on around 35 km.
The Tern HSD P9 is designed for one child.
With its 400 Wh battery we estimate about 33 km per charge with an 80 kg rider and 40 kg of cargo on rolling terrain. Use the range calculator above for your own scenario.
The bike weighs about 25.7 kg and has a maximum permitted total weight (rider, cargo and bike) of 170 kg.
Prices start at €4,999. The final price depends on configuration, battery size and accessories.
