A cargo trike stands on its own: it does not tip when you stop, load the children or park on a slope. The box is large, often with benches for up to four children, and getting in is easy. That makes trikes popular with families with several small children and with riders who do not feel safe balancing a heavy two-wheeler.
A trike does not lean into corners, so you take them slowly, and on cambered roads it pulls towards the kerb. Tilting models reduce this. Speeds are lower than on two wheels, which suits short city trips more than long commutes.
Width is the first question: most trikes are 85 to 90 cm wide and do not fit through a standard door. Check the box rating, the parking brake and the brakes on the front wheels. With 60 to 70 kg of bike, a mid-drive motor is worth having on hills.
Two to four, depending on the box and benches. The box rating is usually 80 to 100 kg.
It is more stable at a standstill and at walking pace. In fast corners it is less forgiving than a two-wheeler, so ride slower.
Most do not: at 85 to 90 cm they need a garage, shed or wide gate. A few narrow models are under 80 cm.
